Real Life Examples

One of the most common examples of liminal spaces are empty or abandoned buildings. Malls are a prominent liminal space as not only are many empty, but many have memories of them being full of activity. Without the crowds populating them, the familiarity associated with it partially goes away. Instead of inviting, the atmosphere gives the feeling that you shouldn't be there.
Another commonplace image is an empty house. Whether it be you or someone you know moving, most people have been in empty homes for short interludes. There's little reason to stay long besides bringing things in or out of it. Simply lacking the stuff that makes it a home changes the feeling of the image and can bring back feelings of moving.
Like many liminal images, this one's actual feelings may be affected by the memories of the viewer. For people living only in cities it may just appear to be a house at night. However, it may feel familair to returning to home after work or being out with friends for people growing up in the suburbs. The streetlamp's lighting may even further this sensation depending on the neighborhood the viewer grew up in or lives in.
