Home Traditions How to make Contact

Everyone has that one thing they always do with their mom around the holidays. Whether it be shopping, making cookies, watching hallmark movies, or decorating the house. In my family, when it got to be Christmas time, we spent hours each night wrapping caramels with my mom. We would turn on some music, and sit around the kitchen island cracking jokes until all were done. The sign to the leftis what hung up in ourkitchen every christmas until it was time to put the caramel stuff away. We could make up to 4 batches a night, which adds up to about 500 caramels. Now multiply that by at least 3 nights a week for close to 2 months. that number starts to add up. But it wasn't my mom who first found this recipe.

My Mammaw found it in a magazine no more than 5 years after my mom was born. For as long as she can remember, she had friends over to help wrap, and just spend time together. Sadly my Mammaw passed in march of 2018, and we continued to carry of on the legacy of caramels as well as many other recipes. My whole life, I have been in a home where caramels are a delicacy. My mom would sell them to pay for sports and christmas. In January of 2017 she got a job in a bank, and was told she couldn't have any other forms of outside income. We could still make some, but only sell directly to family. She just didn't have enough time, and neither did anyone else in our house. Everyone was busy all the time and the small business sort of fell off.

This year I turned 15; not old enough to drive, but old enough that I'm spending money. I needed a job, but like I said, no one has time and especially wouldn't have time to be my personal chauffeur. I missed the holiday tradition of always having caramels, and decided to start back up and start selling them again. I can't make as many as my mom used to, because I am only one person and don't have the help that she did, but everynight I make, or wrap a batch, or sometimes both. Before and after practices, I make it a point to get some work done.
